Public Service Recognition Week 2024

Happy Public Service Recognition Week, everyone! Since 1985, the United States has reserved the first full week of May to honor those who serve our nation as federal, state, county, local and tribal government employees.

With over 140,000 full-time employees across the state, Texas runs because of its public servants. The state of Texas employs people in every job category; road workers, engineers, HR specialists, accountants, correctional officers, case workers, administrative support, marketing managers, and many, many more. While their jobs may vary, their objective is the same; support Texans.

Public service isn’t glamourous work. State employees and their contributions are often overlooked because most citizens don’t ever encounter the people behind the progress. On the whole, we take for granted that the things we use in our everyday lives just sort of happen. Those that make the magic happen do their jobs with little recognition or praise.

Through our Essential Texans interviews, we’ve learned that many state employees see public service as not just an occupation, but a calling. As Suzanne Johnson from TxDOT put it, “You don’t go into government work to get rich, you go because you care about people.” Chris Nelson from TWC shared, “There is so much value in public service.” Julie Beaubien of TxDOT also stated that many state employees consciously choose to work in state government because they have a strong desire to serve the public.

Whether it’s road updates on the highways and back roads, or preserving our history at the Texas State Library and Archives, Texas public servants put their heart and soul into their work. We thank you for your service, this week and every week.
