Managing Texas Railroads: A Closer Look at TxDOT's Jimmy Teal
When we think of the Texas Department of Transportation, we generally think of roadways. But there are many different types of transportation across the state, including our railroads. With over 10,000 miles of railroad tracks in Texas, dedicated state employee Jimmy Teal is the Waco District Railroad/Safety Coordinator at TxDOT, and he is only one of 26 in the whole state!
Jimmy, tell us a little about your work.
I oversee the railroad crossings in the eight counties in the Waco district. This includes (but is not limited to) scheduling work, obtaining right-of-way clearances, and determining which crossings need to be updated. I am also the district safety coordinator and oversee our district complex.
When it comes to transportation and railroads, safety is no small concern.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love getting to be responsible for all the railroad happenings here in our district. With only 26 railroad coordinators in the state, it's an honor to be one of the select few. Each Texas district only has one coordinator, except for Houston. Due to its size, they have two.
I often have folks reach out to me asking about various problems at railroad crossings. While TxDOT doesn't handle those specific issues, I can always direct them to the right office to call within the railroad company, and make sure they get the help they need.
What's your best day on the job?
I try to make every day my best day. (This answer is the reason Jimmy is such an awesome human and employee. He makes each day the best by giving his best!)
What is your experience working at TxDOT?
Here at TxDOT, we are treated like family. I knew that it would be a good fit for me when I started to experience the great benefits and work/life balance. I am also really proud of the safety culture within the Waco District. A lot of people have embraced safety and expect safety from one another. We walk the walk and talk the talk here in Waco.
Tell us a little about your work with TPEA.
It has been a really great experience. I have had the chance to meet so many folks from various agencies, both active employees and retirees. I've definitely enjoyed learning about the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into running an association, as well as being involved in the Texas political scene.
Jimmy joined the TPEA Board of Directors in 2022, and filled the role of President for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. At the 2024 Annual Meeting in July, Jimmy was re-elected for a second three-year term. He looks forward to continuing to serve the state employees and retirees of Texas.
Jimmy, thank you for your service not only to the state of Texas and the Waco district, but to the members of TPEA. We appreciate all you do!
