Just like the 2-year legislative cycle, the election cycle is always happening. Though general elections get the most attention, there are still many important parts that you - the voters - can be a part of. The first step in the cycle is the primaries.
What are Primaries?
Primary elections are held when a party has more than one person running for an open seat. The primaries determine which one of those candidates will be on the ballot for the general election. There are two type of primary elections; open and closed. Texas has open elections, which means you do not have to be registered with a party to vote in its primaries. However, you can only vote in one primary. A closed election means only people registered for that party can vote in the primaries.
When are the Primaries?
There are a few important dates to know for voting in the primary elections:
- November 8, 2025 - First day to file for all other candidates for offices that are regularly scheduled to be on the Primary ballot; first day for independent candidates to file declaration of intent.
- December 8, 2025 (6pm) - Filing deadline for primary candidates; filing deadline for independent candidates to file declaration of intent.
- February 2, 2026 - Last day to register to vote in the Primaries
- February 17, 2026 - First day of early voting for the Primaries
- February 27, 2026 - Last day of early voting
- March 3, 2026 - Election Day
Primary season has already begun, with filing beginning on November 8. Once the deadline to file passes, we'll know all the candidates that will be on the ballot.
