How to Find and Engage Your Legislators
Election season is underway, and we're looking forward to the end of the primaries to see who will be on the ballot in November. This is the time when the real campaigning begins, and it's crucial to know who will be on your ballot, and how you can engage with them.
#1 - Who are my legislators?
Finding out who represents you in the statewide election is the first step in preparing for the general election. You can visit the TPEA Advocacy Action Center and enter your address under "Find Your Elected Officials" to see who your federal, state, and local legislators are. You can click their names to see how to contact them, follow them on social, or visit their official government website.

**NOTE: Not every legislator is up for election this year, but every state representative is up for election every 2 years.
#2 - Dig a little deeper
While every legislator does have an official website, most also have a personal site that dives deeper into their background, their stance on issues, and a calendar of events they are hosting. A quick Google search for their name will provide all their relevant web pages such as websites and social media accounts. Events really ramp up during election season, so signing up for their newsletter can help you stay on top of when they'll be in your area and what kind of events they are holding.
#3 - Reach out
Every legislator's official website and personal site has multiple ways to contact them. So don't be afraid to reach out! Send an email or call to introduce yourself, let them know you are voting constituent in their area, and tell them about the issues that matter to you. Many legislators (especially new ones running for the first time) are not well versed in the needs of state employees and retirees, and hearing from one directly would be extremely beneficial.
During election season, many legislators and candidates hold in person events such as town halls and coffees with candidates. If you are able, attend in person and share your thoughts. Seeing someone in person literally gives a face to the issue and helps your voice stand out.
Remember: Legislators are public servants and you, the public, deserve to be heard.
