State Agencies: Working For All Texans
What is a state agency?
A Texas state agency is created by acts of the Texas Legislature, or by the Texas Constitution. They can be boards, commissions, offices, and departments in the executive, judicial, or legislative branches of state government. State universities and other institutions of higher education are also referred to as agencies. An agency typically operates as a distinct budget entity for purposes of appropriations. Most state agencies belong to the executive branch of government.
Texas has 146 state agencies, not counting higher education institutions.
State of Texas employees are often the unsung heroes of our state. They are frequently overlooked while providing the very services we rely on everyday.

We could write all day about the work the state agencies do for Texans, but it all boils down to this; there is not a day that goes by that we don't utilize the services that state agencies provide. We can ask a plumber to provide proof of licensure from the State Board of Plumbing Examiners before they provide a service. We can access and update our driver's license or ID with the Department of Public Safety when we need them. We can report scams and fraud perpetrators to the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner when they occur. We can apply for permits through Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. All of these services and more are provided by hardworking state employees.
To all those that currently work for the state and retired from the state, we thank you for your tireless effort and your unwavering dedication to Texas!
